A journey filled with promise ended in tragedy on a rural Iowa highway Wednesday morning. A chartered bus carrying the Iowa Lakes Community College Lakers, a small college baseball team, crashed and overturned in a ditch near Twin Lakes in Calhoun County, leaving one person dead and all 32 other occupants injured.
As the Iowa State Patrol works to determine why the bus suddenly left the road, the tight-knit campus community in Estherville is grappling with a loss that has transformed teammates into trauma survivors and a season into a testament of resilience.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, on a highway near Twin Lakes, roughly 110 miles northwest of Des Moines. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the bus was traveling southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, it left the roadway, lost control, and overturned several times before coming to rest in a ditch. No other vehicles were involved.
The scene was severe. Calhoun County emergency management reported that three individuals required a helicopter airlift to trauma hospitals in Des Moines, while the remaining injured were transported by ambulance to four area hospitals. The Iowa State Patrol confirmed that injuries ranged from minor to serious. As of Thursday morning, the college had not released the names of the deceased or the injured, pending notification of all families.
Iowa Lakes Community College, with fewer than 2,000 total students, is the kind of place where a tragedy like this reverberates through every hallway. The Lakers baseball team, which had just opened its season with a four-game series, was en route to Arkansas for a scheduled four-game set against North Arkansas College when the crash occurred. Those games have been canceled.
Student William Evans described the moment he learned his friend was among the injured. He received a video showing his teammate in the back of an ambulance, wearing a neck brace.
"My heart genuinely just sank, like, it just sank immediately," Evans told KCCI. "And, you know, our buddy, he sent us the message, like, are you pulling our chain right now? Like, are you joking? But, no." He said the accident became the singular focus on campus. "It's actually all that people can talk about."
Students organized a vigil Wednesday evening to mourn the loss and support one another, though they requested media not attend. Evans expressed hope that the tragedy would ultimately strengthen their community. "Stuff happens and stuff can go wrong. And, you know, it's important to stay close to your faith," he said. "I really just think that it's going to bring us closer together as a community and as a school because prayers go out to them."
The shockwaves extended far beyond Estherville. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and her husband, Kevin, issued a statement on social media:
"Kevin and I are heartbroken by the horrible news of a deadly crash involving an Iowa Lakes Community College bus transporting student athletes. We are praying for all affected by this tragedy and their families. Please join us in keeping Iowa Lakes Community College in our hearts."
The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, of which Iowa Lakes is a member, released a statement saying it was "heartbroken to learn of the bus accident." North Arkansas College, the intended opponent for the canceled series, also expressed its grief:
"Our hearts are heavy as we grieve alongside the Iowa Lakes College community. The loss of a life is a tragedy that reaches far beyond one campus. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who passed away, and we are lifting up in prayer those who were injured and all who are affected."

The Iowa State Patrol has launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash. Critical questions remain: Was it driver error, a mechanical failure, an environmental hazard on the roadway, or a medical event? The answer will determine not only the official narrative but also the complex legal and financial path that lies ahead for the victims and their families.
This tragedy is a sobering case study in the realities of catastrophic transportation incidents involving team travel. Several critical issues are now in play:
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the individual who lost their life, to all the injured players and staff, and to the entire Iowa Lakes community. No athletic contest, no road trip, is worth this price.
