Kaylee Hottle was a high school senior at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, a rising actress with a role in one of the biggest monster film franchises in the world, and a young woman who had already completed work on her next film. Early Tuesday morning, she was a passenger in a car on a rural Maryland road when the driver lost control and struck a culvert. She was 18 years old.
What Happened
At approximately 2:52 AM on July 21, 2026, deputies with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office and personnel from the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services responded to a fatal single-vehicle collision in the 11400 block of Windsor Road in Ijamsville, Maryland.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1995 Honda Accord, operated by a 19-year-old Frederick man, traveled off the right side of the two-lane roadway and struck a culvert. Excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision. Three people were in the vehicle: the driver and two passengers.
The driver was transported to a local hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. The other passenger declined medical treatment at the scene. Hottle was transported to a regional trauma center, where she was later pronounced dead.
The Frederick County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact DFC Rose at 301-600-1046. No charges against the driver have been reported as of this writing.
Who Was Kaylee Hottle?
Hottle was a native user of American Sign Language who came from a deaf family and grew up in Kyle, Texas. She was enrolled as a senior at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin at the time of her death.
She rose to international recognition portraying Jia, a deaf orphan who communicates with Kong using sign language, in Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The role was significant not only for its cultural reach but for what it represented: a deaf actress, from a deaf family, playing a deaf character in a major studio franchise at a time when Hollywood was under considerable scrutiny for its handling of disability representation.
She also appeared in an episode of Magnum P.I. and had completed work on the upcoming film What Doesn't Kill Us. Her onscreen career had begun with an appearance in a 2017 ad for the ASL translation app Convo.

The Texas School for the Deaf posted: "It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that one of our TSD seniors, Kaylee Hottle, tragically passed away yesterday in a car accident in Frederick, Maryland. Our hearts are with Kaylee's family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time." The school said counseling and support services are being made available for students and staff, and asked the public to respect the family's privacy.

This is a single-vehicle crash in which excessive speed is the currently identified contributing factor, and the driver survived with non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been announced. Whether charges follow will depend on what the full investigation reveals, including any evidence of the driver's speed, any other contributing factors such as distraction or impairment, and whether Maryland prosecutors determine the conduct rises to the level of criminal negligence.
