Lucian Piane, the composer and producer behind years of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” music, died early Monday morning, October 12, after a sedan struck him in Glendale, California. He was 46.
Law enforcement sources told NBC Los Angeles that Piane was crossing San Fernando Road near West Harvard when a sedan hit him, according to the Glendale Police Department. Officials say the driver stayed and called 911. Glendale Fire crews worked on Piane and pronounced him dead at the scene. Los Angeles County Medical Examiner records list his death as occurring Monday.
Glendale police described the crash as a traffic accident and said no drugs or alcohol were involved. No charges have been reported, and the driver hasn’t been publicly identified. Reports so far don’t say the exact time of the crash, whether Piane was in a crosswalk, how fast the car was going, or what the lighting was like.
Piane worked on the main “Drag Race” series from Seasons 1 through 8, composing its music and the Rusical numbers, and also worked on “All Stars.” He co-wrote some of RuPaul’s best-known songs, including “Cover Girl,” “Sissy That Walk,” “Jealous of My Boogie,” “Born Naked,” “Champion,” and “Main Event.” He received a Grammy nomination for his work on the soundtrack of the 2007 film “Hairspray.”
World of Wonder, the show’s production company, remembered him as a sweet man, a dear friend, and a master musician, and hoped his struggles would not overshadow those memories. Franchise judge and producer Michelle Visage called him a beautiful soul and a great loss. Composer Marc Shaiman, who employed Piane as a music and tech assistant for years, recalled their time together as joyful.
Pedestrian deaths are falling but remain high. The Governors Highway Safety Association’s July 2026 report projects 6,732 U.S. pedestrian deaths in 2025. That is down 7% from 7,237 in 2024, the third straight annual decline, but still 5% above 2019. California saw the nation’s largest drop, from 1,067 to a projected 828, yet still recorded more pedestrian deaths than any other state.
The latest federal data, from 2024, shows that about 76.5% of pedestrian deaths with known lighting happened after dark, and about 74.6% occurred away from intersections. About 24% involved a driver who fled. Here, by police account, the driver stayed and called for help, as California law requires.
Whether charges follow depends on what the investigation finds about speed, attention, and right-of-way. In California, drivers must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and exercise due care for pedestrians anywhere on the roadway. A pedestrian crossing outside a crosswalk must yield to vehicles but doesn’t lose the protection of the driver’s duty of care.
For civil claims, California applies pure comparative negligence, so a pedestrian found partly at fault can still recover, with the award reduced by that share. A wrongful death claim by eligible family members generally must be filed within two years. It would typically run through the driver’s liability insurance, which may fall short. California’s minimum is $30,000 per person. The family might also look to the victim’s own underinsured motorist coverage, depending on his policy. If a road design or signal problem contributed, claims against a public agency carry much shorter notice deadlines, as low as six months.
Our condolences go out to Lucian Piane’s family, friends, and the colleagues and fans who knew his music.
