A routine traffic checkpoint in Rowan County escalated into a dangerous chase over the weekend, leaving one motorcyclist pinned beneath a sheriff's vehicle and a second rider successfully evading capture. The incident, which unfolded on Saturday, November 15, 2025, highlights the severe risks of fleeing from law enforcement and the community safety concerns that prompt such traffic operations.
The incident began around 10:36 PM when two motorcyclists approached a traffic checkpoint established by the Rowan County Sheriff's Office at the intersection of Old Beatty Ford Road and China Grove Road. Deputies signaled for the riders to stop, but both refused and instead accelerated away, turning onto China Grove Road to initiate a pursuit. The chase continued until one of the motorcyclists, 23-year-old Marvyn Perez Valencia, crashed at the intersection of Daugherty Road and Bostian Road. The collision resulted in Valencia becoming pinned underneath the front of the pursuing deputy's vehicle, requiring emergency crews to free him before he was transported to Atrium Health Cabarrus with what were described as minor injuries.
Meanwhile, the second motorcyclist did not stop, reportedly circling back toward the original checkpoint before entering Interstate 85. Despite assistance from the N.C. Highway Patrol, this rider managed to evade capture, and the motorcycle was later found abandoned at Exit 47 in Cabarrus County.
In the aftermath of the crash, Marvyn Perez Valencia was charged with multiple offenses following his release from the hospital, including felony fleeing to elude arrest, driving without an operator's license, driving without liability insurance, and carrying a concealed gun. He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $20,000 secured bond.
The search for the second motorcyclist remains active, with the Rowan County Sheriff's Office asking anyone with information to contact them at 704-216-8700 or to submit an anonymous tip to Rowan County Crime Stoppers at 1-866-639-5245.
This incident provides a clear, if unfortunate, example of why traffic enforcement exists and the severe dangers of evasion.
For the readers of YourAccident.com, this story reinforces several important points related to accident liability and safety.
The Rowan County chase is a sobering lesson in how quickly a routine traffic stop can escalate into a life-altering event. The focus for all drivers and riders should be on de-escalation and compliance to ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely.
