General Motors is recalling 80,095 vehicles in the U.S. under two separate safety campaigns. The first covers a software defect that can briefly cut braking at low speeds in several Cadillac and Chevrolet electric vehicles. The second covers a loose steering component in Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans. GM filed both recall reports with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Oct. 29, 2026.

Which GM EVs Are Affected by the Brake Recall?

The larger recall, NHTSA campaign 26V-717, covers 67,380 EVs: the 2023–2027 Cadillac Lyriq, 2024–2027 Chevrolet Blazer EV, 2025–2026 Cadillac Celestiq and 2026–2027 Cadillac Vistiq. GM’s recall report says software in the brake system control module (BSCM) may cause a temporary loss of braking at low speeds. In the Lyriq and Blazer EV, only models with performance all-wheel drive are included.

The Cadillac Lyriq accounts for most of the campaign, with about 44,585 vehicles:

  • 2023 Lyriq: 474
  • 2024 Lyriq: 22,819
  • 2025 Lyriq: 11,926
  • 2026 Lyriq: 9,322
  • 2027 Lyriq: 44

The recall also covers 18,802 Vistiq SUVs and 82 Celestiq sedans. The Celestiq is Cadillac’s hand-built flagship, and the recalled units split into 51 from 2025 and 31 from 2026. Roughly 3,900 Blazer EVs make up the rest, including 562 from the 2024 model year.

How GM Discovered the Brake Defect

A GM technical expert raised the issue on April 10, 2026, through the company’s Speak Up for Safety program. The report followed an incident in which a 2024 Lyriq struck a garage at low speed. GM then found that an earlier remedy had not fixed the condition. In 2024, GM had recalled certain Lyriq models because the anti-lock braking system could release brake pressure unexpectedly. GM says the new fix covers both problems.

GM has logged 24 field complaints tied to the brake defect between February 2024 and June 2026. Those complaints include 20 minor crashes, two of which involved claims of minor injuries. GM estimates that every vehicle in the recall population has the defect.

How GM Will Fix the EV Brake Problem

The fix is a free BSCM software update, delivered either over the air or at a dealership. Owner notification letters are expected to go out Dec. 14, 2026. Kelley Blue Book reports that GM has not yet released the update for 2023–2024 Lyriq models. GM’s internal number for this recall is N262570900.

Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana Steering Recall

The second recall, NHTSA campaign 26V-718, covers 12,715 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans from the 2025 and 2026 model years. The vans may have a steering gear assembly with a nut that was not tightened properly. If the nut separates from the assembly while the van is moving, the driver could lose steering control and face a higher risk of a crash. The affected vans break down as follows:

  • 2025 GMC Savana: 3,568
  • 2026 GMC Savana: 454
  • 2025–2026 Chevrolet Express: about 8,700

GM said it was not aware of any injuries linked to the van defect. Dealers will check the steering gear’s serial number and replace the assembly if needed, free of charge. Owner letters are scheduled for Dec. 14, 2026, under GM recall number N262579350.

The van recall follows a June 2026 campaign, 26V-399, that covered 26,541 Express and Savana vans for the same steering gear nut problem. In that case, a malfunctioning part sensor at supplier Nexteer’s plant in Saginaw, Michigan, let some steering gears with hand-tightened nuts pass inspection. Drivers may notice less precise steering, or a steering wheel that sits off-center while driving straight, before the nut comes loose.

What GM Owners Should Do Now

Owners can check whether their vehicle is included by entering their 17-digit VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup tool. VINs for both campaigns became searchable on Oct. 29. Chevrolet customer service is available at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. Van owners who notice steering symptoms should not wait for the mail notice and should contact a dealer right away. Drivers of the affected EVs should leave extra stopping distance in parking lots, garages and stop-and-go traffic until the update is installed.

GM Also Faces a Federal Probe Into Its 6.2L V8

The recalls come as GM faces a larger federal investigation into its trucks and SUVs. NHTSA’s Engineering Analysis EA26005 covers an estimated 997,743 vehicles from the 2021–2026 model years equipped with the 6.2-liter L87 V8. GM must submit field data in that probe by Nov. 13, 2026.
